The Company
I first remember noticing exotic plants while working at my first job as a young engineer in Niger, Africa: the cool baobab tree, the desert rose (adenium obesum) and the yellow flowering acacia. It was at my next adventure working at LG2, in James Bay, in northern Québec that I was struck by the absence of vegetation - there was little colour, no growth, no apparent life. Events and timing came together in 1979 when I invested all my savings in a greenhouse situated in the sleepy town of St-Lazare, just outside of my hometown, Montreal.
The journey has been fun. From a small retail operation, to an importing wholesale operation, to the current blend of growing and importing, La Jardinière St-Louis has adapted, grown and thrived.
I believe in the importance of plants in our lives. It really bothers me to see artificial plants in high-end hotels. Plants are living things - not dust collectors. They have ornamental value, but they are also multi-faceted: they can be edible or perfumed; they can have incredible longevity or can survive briefly, but intensely. It is the richness and variety that still amazes me.
I believe that it can be difficult to nurture plants inside or outside our homes. But with proper knowledge, the proper plant will succeed.
